Epidemic Modeling

For data scientists working with healthcare companies, a key area of expertise expected in the near future would be analyzing the spread data, modeling epidemics and providing the decision makers with insights at the right time.

This course aims to prepare data scientists for such tasks.  The approach will be primarily “applied”.  You work on real world data and explore short cuts, state of the art techniques to answer key questions.



Day 1:  Mathematics and Visualizations basics

  • A refresher on differential equations and optimizers that we encounter in statistical modeling and how to understand the behavior
  • Visualization strategies applied in disease modeling

Day 2:  Compartmental models (SIR and more)

  • What are compartmental models and the fundamental equations
  • Hands-on strategies to build compartmental models from the data
  • Adding more compartments

Day 3:  Machine learning and AI in pandemic modeling

  • Agent based modeling basics and applications to Pandemic modeling
  • Regression and neural networks for predicting the pandemics



We shall conduct a online exam on day 3.  Those who complete and score more than 75% will earn a certificate.  Those who participated will all get a badge.



Dr. Anand Jayaraman

PhD from University of Pittsburgh, USA

Dr. Anand is an experienced Quant Trader and Portfolio Manager having over 2 decades of experience in BFSI and teaching at prominent US universities like Pennsylvania State University and Duke University. He teaches statistics, Linear Regression, Logistic Regression, and Time Series. His areas of expertise are Data Analytics, Machine Learning, Retail Forecasting, Quantitative Model Building, Time Series Analysis, Derivatives Trading, Futures trading.


Dr. Gnana K Bharathy

PhD from University of Pennsylvania, USA

Certified Project Manager (PMP) and Scrum Master (Scrum Alliance)

He has over 15+ years of experience applying data science (and other advanced analytics approaches), in a powerful combination with design sciences such as design thinking, architecture (business, information, data, product) and diagnostics to add radical transformational value to clients.  He has been working in both pure industry consulting as well as university-based, external consulting in the capacities of modeller/ analyst and project manager in several countries (mostly in United States, Australia, New Zealand, and to a lesser extent in Canada, Jamaica, India and Malaysia).

Gnana is experienced in setting up organizational processes and systems for data science and AI [certified in both waterfall (PMP) and agile (Scrum)], but primarily a data scientist and architect with modelling organizational processes and social systems. He taught courses relating to Project Management, Risk, Governance and Change in the past.


Dr. Parag Mantri

Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering from North Carolina State University, USA

Dr. Mantri is PhD in Aerospace Engineering with a current focus on Robotics, Autonomous Systems and Connected Devices. He also works on applications of Machine Learning & Deep Learning in these areas. With over 12 years of experience in Engineering and R&D working in a wide spectrum of domains such as Aerospace, Oil & Gas, and Locomotive, he is a versatile engineer, researcher and innovator. He has 7 filed patents (2 granted). Before joining INSOFE, he was Lead Research Engineer at GE Global Research. He has also been an educator in a university set up as well as volunteering for community teaching for underprivileged children.
